| What is included in Lilly's Other Income and Deductions line? |
Lilly's OID line on the income statement includes net interest income, income or deductions related to partnering or selling marketed products or unapproved products still in development, the after-tax income from the Lilly ICOS JV and other miscellaneous items.
It is important to note that as an ongoing part of our strategy, we actively manage our portfolio of legacy products (whose patents have expired) and innovative drug candidates throughout our pipeline. Legacy products can utilize resources in sales, manufacturing, quality, pharmacovigilance, and other parts of the business. Consequently, we out-license these products when we identify opportunities to achieve a positive NPV and enabling us to reallocate resources to higher-priority products.
Since we generate more innovation than we choose to resource, we're in a strong position to make choices that further enhance the value of our pipeline in the near term and our product portfolio over the long term. As a result, we'll continue to assess opportunities to partner or out-license certain drug candidates.
Needless to say, we will pursue out-licensing when we believe it will produce a higher return than keeping drug candidates in house. These opportunities will often lead to the recognition of upfront income, milestones for development success, and royalties after commercial launch.
As with all our assets, we periodically re-evaluate the progress of partnered or out-licensed compounds and take action when we think the economics have changed. As a result, our income recognition may vary from period to period.
In another type of transaction, partners can often help us maximize the potential of molecules we want to keep in-house with their medical or marketing expertise or their presence in the marketplace. They also can provide funding or resources needed to facilitate development efforts.
These activities are an ongoing part of the way we do business and will continue. However, they lead to variations in our other income line from period to period.
